Children’s Hospital and Swiss Partners Review Progress of Paediatric Oncology Cooperation Programme

For more than a year, the Children’s Clinical University Hospital has been implementing the Swiss–Latvian Cooperation Programme project “Advancement of Paediatric Cancer Care at the Children’s Clinical University Hospital” with the aim of improving diagnostics, treatment, and quality of life for children with oncological and rare diseases, as well as for children who have recovered from these conditions. The project focuses on ensuring continuity of care and a patient-centred, multidisciplinary approach in paediatric oncology and rare disease care.

The project is being implemented in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Embassy of Switzerland in Latvia, and cooperation partners in Switzerland.

On 28 May, the Children’s Hospital welcomed Nathalie Vesco, Programme Director at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Ieva Kalniņa, National Programme Director at the Embassy of Switzerland in Latvia, and Dita Čudare, representative of the Ministry of Health.

During the visit, participants discussed the progress of project implementation and current developments across several project components. Particular attention was devoted to the establishment of the Healthcare Advancement Centre (HAC), which is considered a key prerequisite for the development of modern diagnostic and research infrastructure at the Children’s Hospital. Anda T., Head of the Healthcare Advancement Centre, presented the progress of the design phase, with special emphasis on the planned development of the Biobank and Diagnostic Laboratory within the new infrastructure.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in adopting the experience and best practices of Swiss experts in the development of modern laboratories, biobanking, and research processes. Participants further discussed future cooperation opportunities aimed at supporting the achievement of the project’s objectives and ensuring the sustainable development of paediatric oncology and rare disease care in Latvia.

As part of the visit, Nathalie Vesco also met with Valts Ābols, Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Hospital, and Board Members Zane Straume and Marija Hramcova.
