Latvia implements major environmental improvement project with Swiss financial support

A support programme has been implemented with financial support from Swiss to ensure a clean and safe environment at the historically polluted site in Aizkraukle.

On Tuesday, June 3rd, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the support programme for environmental remediation for the polluted site in Aizkraukle, developed by the Ministry of Climate and Energy.

The total funding for the environmental remediation is  14.47 millions Swiss francs (EUR 15.19 millions). The Swiss contributes 85% of the total budget.

The partenrship between Latvia and Switzerland  officially began on November 12th, 2024, following the signage  of  the agreement between Latvia and Switzerland. Its formal launch took place in March of this year during the conference “Groundwater – Make the Invisible Visible!”.

“The support programme represents the next step in implementing the planned environmental improvement works. The outcome of this programme will provide the citizens with a safe and clean environment. As a small country, our needs for the development of various projects often exceed our short-term financial capacity.  It is important for Latvia to secure investement oportunities from outside sources to fullfill our inrernal needs.

We are pleased and grateful for Swiss’s significant contribution to improve the quality of the environment,” explains Kaspars Melnis, Minister of Climate and Energy.

Thanks to Swiss financial support, the further spread of pollution from the source will be significantly reduced and contained.

Upon completion of the planned works, a post-remediation monitoring system will be established to ensure the project continues to be successful and consistent with established environmental quality requirements.

Preparation of the documentation for the remediation procurement is currently underway.

The project will be implemented by the State Environmental Service under the Ministry of Climate and Energy’s supervision , in cooperation with Aizkraukle Municipality. The project is planned to be completed by June 30th, 2029.
