Minister Jānis Vitenbergs to Visit a Historically Polluted Site in Aizkraukle Municipality

On Wednesday, 15 July, as part of a regional visit to Aizkraukle Municipality, Minister for Climate and Energy Jānis Vitenbergs will visit the municipality. During the visit, the Minister will discuss preparedness for the upcoming heating season with representatives of the municipal district heating company, meet with the management of JSC Latvenergo, and visit the Pļaviņas Hydropower Plant to assess the security of critical infrastructure. The visit will conclude with a tour of the historically polluted site in Aizkraukle, where the Minister will be briefed on the progress of the remediation works being carried out under the Swiss-Latvian Cooperation Programme.
 
The Minister, together with representatives of the State Environmental Service and Aizkraukle Municipality, will visit the historically contaminated site in Aizkraukle, commonly referred to as the “contamination hill”. During the visit, attention will be focused on a project being implemented under the Swiss-Latvian Cooperation Programme “Remediation of Historical Pollution”.
 

The total programme budget amounts to approximately EUR 15.19 million, of which 85% is funded by Switzerland. The project is being implemented by the State Environmental Service in cooperation with Aizkraukle Municipality. Upon completion, the project will eliminate the source of contamination.
